Our divisions speak the industry's language. This page does not.

Each division below describes its work exactly as the sector describes it: accurately, professionally, and without a single false statement. On their sites, the plain meaning is behind a paywall. Here it is free, and always will be.

Assurance / Meridian Assurance

Correspondent banking for complex counterparty structures
Penalties are a line item. Profit is the business. The complexity is the service: it is what makes the counterparty hard to list.
Personal, commercial and speciality lines since 1974
We insure your confidence. We do not insure the event. The two are priced separately and only one of them is sold to you.
Central counterparty clearing and novation services
A market in obligations that have not yet landed. Novation is the part where the obligation changes owner while still in the air.
Advocacy, standing and recognised injury
Defence against evidence. Standing is the mechanism: once exposure to a fact is an injury, the fact acquires a claimant.
Board and executive appointments for regulated institutions
Executive search for the accused. The appointment is to a position of formal responsibility, held by someone independent of the decision record.
Forward markets in personal outcome data
Markets for the things about you that have not happened yet. The position is opened before the outcome and settles whether or not you are told.
Independent assurance for complex group structures
The auditor is a member of the group it audits. Independence is maintained by a partner from another office reading the file.
Reputation management for public-sector programmes
The engagement succeeds when the programme continues and the criticism concludes. Both are measured; only one of them was the problem.
Rescission for material misrepresentation
On receiving a large claim, we re-read your original application and cancel the policy from the day you bought it, over an unrelated error. Premiums returned.
Utilisation review
A doctor who has never met you decides your treatment is unnecessary. Paid by volume of reviews completed.
Claims lifecycle management
Delay, then deny, then defend. Most people stop at the first step.
Network design
Your condition is covered; the doctors who treat it are not. Neither statement is a denial.
Appeals process efficiency
The appeal is not built to be lost. It is built to be abandoned.
Reserve and float management
The longer we take to pay, the more we earn on money that is already yours.
Breakage recognition
Booking as profit the part of what you paid for that you will never use. The harder the product is to redeem, the bigger this number gets. It is the only revenue line that improves when the product gets worse.
Redemption friction calibration
Deliberately tuning how hard it is to claim: hard enough to protect the forecast, easy enough to satisfy a regulator. Reported quarterly as a performance metric.
Risk-based repricing
Raise the price, the healthy leave, the pool gets sicker, so raise the price. Every single step is actuarially correct and the outcome is a death spiral.
Mandatory optionality
An optional extra you cannot decline while buying, recorded as your choice. You may opt out in writing, by post, within fourteen days.
Conformity assessment
Writing the standard, then selling certification against it, then auditing the certified. Three fees from one document you wrote yourself.
Queue yield
Hold time is not a failure of service. It is a filter, with a measured abandonment curve and an optimum.

Banking / Meridian Bank

High-to-low posting order
We take your biggest payment first so four small ones bounce instead of one. Each bounce is a fee.
Payment message repair
Deleting the name of a sanctioned party from a transfer before sending it. The money is unchanged; only the sentence about it is edited.Documented: one bank forfeited 8.9bn for this across 3,897 transactions
De-risking
Closing the accounts of an entire region, trade or nationality rather than assessing anyone individually. Cheaper than judgement.
Risk-based monitoring
Not looking at the corridors we have decided not to look at.Documented: 881m in cartel proceeds; 670bn in unmonitored wires
Regulatory resolution strategy
Charges filed, then deferred five years, then dismissed. Nobody is convicted. This is the product.
Exceptional item presentation
Booking a record fine as a notable item rather than a loss.Documented: 1.9bn penalty, 20.6bn profit, 8.3bn dividends, same year
Nominee directorship services
Hiring someone to hold formal responsibility, sign what they are not shown, resign when required, and serve the sentence if there is one.
Divisive merger
Splitting the company so the liabilities go to a new entity with no money, which then files for bankruptcy. The trade has a nickname for it.

Advocacy / Institute for Epistemic Harm Reduction & Culpability Partners

Reframing
Turning a finding into a perspective, because a perspective cannot be wrong, only disrespected.
Stakeholder sentiment management
Making the person holding the evidence into the aggressor.
Methodology objection
When the finding cannot be attacked, attacking the sample.
Political responsibility
A minister resigns. Nothing else changes. The instrument is free and requires no contract.
Leadership transition
The person who signed leaves. The people who decided stay, and trade the same afternoon under a different signature.

Communications / Damage Control

Dynamic Alignment of Media, Accountability, Governance and Expectations / Continuous Oversight of Narrative, Transition, Reputation, Obligation and Liability
Damage control. Thirteen professional terms, each defensible on its own, arranged so that the first letters say what the other thirteen words are for. The firm maintains the arrangement is accidental.
Narrative recovery
Moving the conversation from what the document said to what the project hoped to do.
Digital-first delivery
Holding it in a virtual environment, then citing the choice as evidence of modernity and as job creation for technology specialists.
Stakeholder alignment
Offering the loudest critic a role in the next phase.
Working document reclassification
Declaring published material an internal draft after it is criticised. Usually true, which is why it works.
Process assurance
Commissioning a review of how the criticism arose, rather than of whether it was correct.
Continuity planning
The person most associated with the failure moves to an equivalent post elsewhere in the same system.
Statutory response window
Thirty days to answer, extendable by sixty without giving a reason. Used four times in a chain, it is a year before anyone reads anything.
Commercial confidentiality
Refusing to show intragroup pricing because it would harm a third party. The third party is another company in the same group.
Sequential disclosure
Each layer will only name the next one. Four requests, in order, each restarting the clock.
Regulatory deference
Every regulator says it is the next regulator's business. All of them are right.
Integrated programme delivery
Seven companies, one owner, 168 contracts, 2,016 invoices a year, three shell layers between any two of them. Tracing it end to end takes 124 years, and not one step of the obstruction is unlawful.Arithmetic: 3 hops x 90 days x 168 streams
Capacity building
The money went to consultants and think tanks. Something was built; it was the consultancy sector.

Market infrastructure / Meridian Clearing

Transferable obligation note
A liability, packaged and sold before anyone knows it exists. The last person holding it answers for all of it.
Tranched responsibility
Splitting the blame into layers so the bottom one takes it first. The bottom layer is built to be insolvent.
Synthetic exposure
Making money from a consequence that will land entirely on somebody else, without ever touching it.
Discovery volatility
Betting on when the story breaks. Bought mostly by people who can decide when the story breaks.
Counterparty transfer assurance
Insurance that pays you if you manage to sell in time, and pays nothing if you do not. It is priced correctly and understood by nobody.
Reserve-backed
Backed by assets that can only be checked by destroying them, which is why they have never lost value. The reserve is jars
Quoted in resignations
The sovereign version settles against a person who resigns, not against money. Nobody pays anything.
0.02 basis points
Two hundredths of one hundredth of a per cent. Invisible once. Charged 88,133 times in nine seconds it takes 17.6% of the whole thing. The rate is not the trick; the frequency is.Arithmetic: 100 USD x 88,133 transfers on a 50m notional
Settlement defence
Selling legal help to the person left holding it, at a discount funded by the commissions we earned from everyone who sold to them.
Risk-free market
A market where every single participant genuinely carries no risk, because nobody holds anything long enough for risk to attach, while the total risk never changes at all. Each part is safe and the whole is not. In logic this is the fallacy of composition; in finance it is the business model.
Netting
Everyone's exposures cancel out against each other. What is left over belongs to the market, and the market is not a person who can be sued.
Interbank tier
Institutions passing the same liability between themselves at speed. Retail is excluded, officially because retail would hold it to the end, which is the only thing that would make the risk visible.
Signal monitoring
Reading the security team's data-loss alerts as a market signal. The monitoring is already there and is entirely lawful; only the use of it is new.
Pre-announcement exposure management
Selling the liability during the ninety days between noticing that someone is gathering evidence and the day it becomes public. Nobody touches the whistleblower. They just sell first. The statutory windows that protect the discloser also make the timing predictable
Timing alpha
Profit from the period in which the company knows and the public does not.
Discloser non-interference
Leaving the whistleblower entirely alone. Not out of principle: interference is a personal crime that cannot be moved to a designated officer, and it would achieve nothing the desk needs.
Continuity of practice
The disclosure is upheld, the review is genuine, the practice continues. By then the money has moved, so the review costs nothing and can afford to be honest.

Method

Nothing on the division sites is false. Every term they use is the term the sector uses, in the sense the sector uses it, and would survive a compliance review. That is the finding this site exists to report: the practices do not require lying. They require vocabulary. A euphemism is not a lie, it is a lie's delivery mechanism, and it is the only part of the arrangement that has to be bought. On their sites we charge you for the plain meaning, which is what the industry does. Here it is free, which is what nobody does.
